Leadership is a term that many people have tried
to define.
There are thousands of articles and books that have
been written to try to come up with a concrete definition of the word
leadership. Many seminars and workshops have also been held to define
leadership which has led to various definitions of leadership hence confusion
and misunderstanding.
Leadership
is Learnt.
The truth is that all great leaders need a
foundation to build their leadership skills on. Leadership is learnt more than
its taught. To be a great leader you have to know the truth about leadership.
This is the foundation where your knowledge will be learnt from to prevent
being swayed by any arguement that has been raised towards leadership.
Through a good and a strong foundation of
knowledge about leadership one can be able to analyse various opinions and
ideas presented with wisdom.
Leading
by example.
In practising leadership, actions must be
expressed because a leader leads by example. Being a leader requires that you
walk the talk by doing what you say.
You should be able to do something well as your
followers abserve, so that you may do it again with them and later, your
followers may do it on their own as you observe. Being a practical leaderhelps
you instill a working mentality on the follower and throught hat you become a
good example and a role model.
Decision
Making in Leadership.
A leader must understand that they will always be
required to make decisions. A leader should be a person who is able to collect
enough information and analyse it thoroughly in order to come up with a
suitable decision.
A leader should not be afraid to make decisions.
At times a leader can make the wrong decision and hurt the whole organisation but it should not be a
discouragement.
When it comes to decision making, a leader should
be firm and focused for them to be effective and benefit the whole
organization.
Leadership
is Influence.
All leaders should understand that influence is
the main ingredient of leadership. Without influence there is no leading.
Influence is the ability to gain followers. John Maxwell says that, "If you are leading and no one is
following, you are only taking a walk."
An effective leader is a person who can attract
followers by portraying positive traits. Through influence, a leaders should be
able to provide service to others. Leading through service is a strong and
positive influence to the society.
A leader should be a person who is working hard
for the benefit of others and inspiring others to do the same. An effective
leader should portray an attitude of influence through service for the benefit
of everyone.
You
can be a Leader too.
Anyone can become an effective leader. Leadership
has to do with principles and behavioural patterns which can be learnt and
applied to portray the true essence of leadership.
Leadership is more learnt that it is taught. An
individual has to put effort and resources into learning the basic principles
of leadership. The learning should provide the individual with a strong
foundation full of truth and wisdom about leadership.
